Board of Directors

Emily Hao | President

Emily wears three hats at KVSC: President of the Board of Directors, coach, and off-ice trainer — and skating has been part of her life since childhood.

She grew up training under Kim and Kaitie MacVey, the club's former and current head coaches, and went on to become one of New Brunswick's top competitive figure skaters, representing the province for several years. Every summer, she headed to the Mariposa International School of Skating in Barrie, Ontario, to train under Olympic and NHL coaches.

Off the ice, Emily holds a BSc in Kinesiology and an MSc in Exercise and Sport Science, and is a Certified Personal Trainer and Pregnancy & Postpartum Athleticism Coach. She runs her own personal training business, InSeason Athletics, and brings that same expertise directly to KVSC's off-ice training program.

Skating was one of the first things Emily ever loved, and that passion has only grown, expanding into a career built around fitness and movement. It also shaped who she is: the discipline, determination, and self-control to set goals and chase them, the perseverance to push through setbacks, and deep respect and gratitude for those around her.

Now, as a coach, trainer, and board president, Emily's goal is to help the next generation of skaters find the same joy on the ice that she did, and build the same lifelong love of the sport.

Beth Ferris | Test Chair

Beth is a mother of four and grandmother of five who was very involved with the skating executive in the late 1990's and early 2000's. Fast forward to 2024 when her grandson started skating and the club needed a Test Chair—and here she is! Beth is a native Saint Johner who dabbled in CanSkate many years ago and played girls high school hockey when it was initiated in the 1970's. She has a Masters of Science in Speech Language Pathology and worked as a paediatric Speech Pathologist for 39 years at Horizon Health.  She has volunteered for nearly thirty years sewing costumes for the Kennebecasis Valley Players and KVHS.  In her spare time, Beth loves to travel, particularly to Europe and the British Isles.  She has enjoyed volunteering at the club and would encourage any interested parent or grandparent to do so.

Hailie Ryan

My love for skating began at the age of 2 when my mom first took me to the rink with my brothers, that turned into Pre-Can, CanSkate, then figure skating and hockey, when we moved to Quispamsis when I was 7, I made the decision to dedicate myself fully to figure skating.

I first competed at the age of 6 in a FunFest and continued up to STAR 8 and STAR 9, and loved every minute of it. As a skater, I have earned one Skate Canada Gold Test and am currently back on the ice working toward earning another.

For the past 10 years, I have been fortunate to share my lifelong passion for skating through coaching. I am a certified CanSkate, STARSkate, and PowerSkate coach and enjoy helping skaters of all ages build confidence, develop strong fundamentals, and reach their personal goals in a positive and encouraging environment. Outside of the rink, I work as an Educational Assistant, where I have gained valuable experience supporting children with diverse learning needs. I am committed to creating a safe, fun, and supportive atmosphere where every skater feels empowered to learn, grow, and enjoy the sport as much as I do.

Jillian Lee

Jillian began skating at just 2½ years old with The Barrie Figure Skating Club and Mariposa School of Skating in Barrie, Ontario. Growing up in a family deeply rooted in skating—with a mother who coached figure skating for more than 40 years and a father who coached hockey—she developed a love for the sport from an early age. Training in an environment surrounded by world-class and Olympic skaters and coaches inspired Jillian to dream big, work hard, and develop a deep appreciation for the artistry, dedication, and lifelong lessons that skating can offer. Throughout her skating journey, she was fortunate to be mentored by incredible coaches whose encouragement, guidance, and belief in her helped shape not only the skater she became, but also the coach she strives to be today.

Jillian’s lifelong passion for skating eventually led her to perform professionally with Disney On Ice for seven years. As a principal performer, she portrayed the role of Rapunzel, a dream role that allowed her to combine her love of skating, performance, and storytelling while travelling the world and creating magical moments for children and families. It was a dream come true and remains one of the most treasured experiences of her skating career.

Jillian began her coaching career in 2025 and is a certified CanSkate Coach. She is continuing to expand her coaching education as she prepares to complete her Regional Coach training and begin working with STAR 1–5 skaters in the Fall of 2026.

Sharing her love of skating with the next generation is where Jillian’s heart truly is. She loves watching children discover their confidence, celebrate their accomplishments, and experience the excitement that comes with learning something new. Whether it’s a skater stepping onto the ice for the very first time or achieving a goal they’ve worked hard to reach, she believes every milestone deserves to be celebrated. Her goal is to create a positive, encouraging environment where every skater feels supported, valued, confident, and excited to come to the rink.

Her late mother remains one of Jillian’s greatest inspirations. Watching the care, kindness, and dedication she showed her students for more than four decades left a lasting impression, and Jillian feels incredibly honoured to continue that legacy in her own way. She also carries with her the lessons and encouragement of the many coaches who inspired her throughout her own skating journey. She hopes to be the kind of coach who makes a lasting difference—not only by teaching skating skills, but by helping young people build confidence, resilience, friendships, and a lifelong love for the sport. She believes that some of the most meaningful lessons learned on the ice extend far beyond skating itself.

When she’s not at the rink, Jillian enjoys painting, sewing, creative DIY home projects, and spending time with her family. She has a lifelong skating tradition of putting her left skate on before her right for good luck, and her favourite skating elements have always been spirals and field movements. Growing up, she admired the artistry and elegance of Tara Lipinski and Sasha Cohen, who inspired her love of performance and expression on the ice.

Jillian is grateful to be part of the Kennebecasis Valley Skating Club community and looks forward to helping skaters of all ages discover the same love, confidence, and joy that skating has brought to her own life.

Brianna Corkum

Brianna has been skating since she was 6 years old, and has been coaching since 2014. She's had the pleasure of coaching at KVSC since 2016. Brianna has achieved certifications through Skate Canada to teach CanSkate, StarSkate and PowerSkate—she loves teaching skaters of all ages and abilities.

 Kim MacVey

Kim MacVey is a recreational and competitive coach with the Kennebecasis Valley Skating Club, where she also serves as the information contact during CanSkate sessions. Trained in all disciplines, Kim has been coaching for over 40 years, bringing a wealth of experience and passion to every skater she works with.

She began skating at the age of 5½ in Oakville, Ontario. During her pre-teen years, she trained at the Granite Club in Toronto before moving to Saint John, where she has been part of the skating community since 1976. After competing until the early 1980s, Kim transitioned into coaching and has been dedicated to developing new generations of skaters of all levels ever since.

Inspired by her coaches, supportive parents, and a natural ability and passion for skating, Kim turned her early success into a lifelong commitment to the sport. As a competitor, she proudly represented New Brunswick three times as a Junior skater at Nationals and became the first-ever triple Gold Medalist in Atlantic Canada at just 15 years old.

Her coaching career has been equally accomplished. Kim has been recognized nationally with two prestigious awards: the Skate Canada National Award of Excellence for Club and Recreational Coaching and the Award of Excellence for Volunteer Contribution with Skate Canada. Among her most rewarding coaching moments are seeing her first student pass a gold test, guiding multiple skaters to Skate Canada Challenge, and receiving the inaugural National Award of Excellence for Club and Recreational Coaching.

Currently a Nationally Trained Coach, Kim values the success of her skaters—whether recreational or competitive—and believes strongly in patience, approachability, and keeping the joy in hard work. She often describes her own skating journey as a balance of joy in learning, carefree moments on the ice, and the stubborn determination needed to achieve goals. Her advice to young skaters reflects this perspective: “Be patient, and trust your coach—we’ve been there ourselves.”

Kim has also passed her love of skating on to her daughter, Kaitie, who followed in her footsteps and is now the Head Coach of the Kennebecasis Valley and Saint John Skating Clubs. Together, they represent both the history and the future of the clubs, sharing a deep commitment to the skating community in the greater Saint John area.

Outside of coaching, Kim carries fond traditions and memories from her skating days, such as pinning her lucky skater charm under her skirt before competitions and tests. Her favorite jumps as a skater were the double flip and double lutz.

Kim’s enduring love for the sport, combined with her determination and experience, continues to inspire skaters to grow, achieve their goals, and find their own success on the ice.

Wade Glendenning | PowerSkate Volunteer

From his very first steps on the ice, power skating was the foundation of Wade's hockey journey. He was taught early that strong skating skills are the key to becoming a successful hockey player—a lesson that has stayed with him throughout his career and now inspires his philosophy.

Wade went on to play AAA hockey throughout his minor hockey career, and later had the opportunity to participate in the Boston Challenge Cup. He continued his competitive career playing Junior B hockey in Belledune, where he further developed his skills, work ethic, and understanding of the game. While his competitive playing days eventually came to an end, Wade's passion for hockey never did. He continues to stay involved in the game through community leagues and looks forward to sharing his passion and knowledge with generations to come.

Through his recent experience with Hockey Ministries, Wade had the opportunity to mentor and teach youth, helping players build confidence, improve their skills, and develop a love for the game. He believes every player deserves a positive, encouraging environment where they can grow both on and off the ice.

As a power skating volunteer, Wade's goal is to help players of all ages and skill levels build strong skating fundamentals, increase their confidence, and develop the speed, balance, and edge control needed to succeed in hockey. He combines his competitive playing experience with a passion for teaching to create engaging, supportive, and challenging sessions that help every skater reach their full potential.

Joe Smith | PowerSkate Volunteer

Joe grew up playing AAA hockey in Montreal and New Brunswick before leaving home to play Junior ‘A’ in Ontario and the Maritimes. Afterwards, he played college hockey for four years before finishing his career playing in Sweden.
Joe has been training youth hockey players over the summers in North America and Europe for 20 years.
